Like clockwork, I hear the sound of the toddler's bedroom door open. A minute passes before it slams shut, a sound that is nothing but brain-jarring at six-thirty in the morning.
In a sleepy daze I vow to punch whomever is slamming doors at this ungodly hour but as the fog of sleep lifts from around me, I can hear the toddler standing outside my bedroom door yelling, "Mom? Mom? You there? I nee halp! Sheepie? Come halp me!"
I clumsily extend an arm from the warm tangle of sleep and pillows and reach for the iPad that sits on my nightstand. Pulling it from it's charging post, I slide out of bed with it and stumble into the hallway where the toddler is standing bright-eyed and bushy-tailed on the other side of the baby gate that promises no late night adventures around the house.
I hand over the iPad as he quickly runs back into room, jumping into bed with a hearty, "Danks, Mom! Now I watch a movie!" With tiny tech-savvy fingers I watched as he navigated the tablet, a swipe here, a swipe there. Within seconds the screen illuminated with red as the Netflix app came to life.
I have now bought myself at least another forty-five minutes of uninterrupted slumber as familiar voices begin to flood the toddler's bedroom.
Recently Netflix has rolled out their "Just For Kids" portal, filled with movies and TV shows age-appropriate for kids 12 and under. With easy to navigate titles, bright, bold, extra-large versions of their favorite animals, cartoon characters and superheros, little fingers have no trouble at all finding their favorite shows while parents can rest easy knowing they won't straggle into inappropriate-viewing territory.
In fact, all "Just For Kids" content is selected with the help from Common Sense Media to provide ratings, reviews and information so parents can easily make choices for their kids' viewing pleasure. As big fans of Netflix and the ability to stream our favorite movies and TV shows anywhere and on more than one-hundred devices, the newly dedicated "Just For Kids" section has been a saving grace.
Now when the toddler awakens at six-thirty in the morning and lovingly requests to watch a movie, I don't worry about what he's viewing and I can rest assured, literally, that for the following forty-five minutes he is among his friends, George (of the Curious variety), Thomas (the Tank Engine) and Jake (the eerily kind of good-looking child pirate).
Don't know who I'm talking about? Just several of the toddler's favorite characters whose Disney Jr. and PBS shows have all been added to the "Just For Kids" content. The "Just For Kids" portal has also been extremely helpful when we're looking to stream a movie for our weekly family movie night gatherings. So what did the toddler choose to watch this past weekend? One of my personal favorites, Dr. Suess' The Lorax. Thanks to Netflix, our weekly family movie nights just got more fun.

This is great! Emmy loves Netflix but I'm always worried she'll start watching something adult...definitely checking this out...thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove the kids portal - it means mommy gets a nap with baby on days I need it while the 4 year old watches a show.
ReplyDeleteThis kids portal is a great idea! I love how little kids learn so quickly how to use iPhones, iPads, computers, etc. It is pretty amazing actually. We always joke that my nieces will teach my mom how to use her iPhone. My niece knows how to do face time, speaker, take photos, open apps. . . she can do it all. Crazy!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is not only a netflix whiz... She can pull up cat videos on youtube on the ipad and watches them for hours! She does things with my ipad that I don't even know how to do
